6 MOST POPULAR COSMETIC SURGERIES FOR MEN

Cosmetic surgery is a major industry, and according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, almost 18 million people undergo cosmetic surgery every year.  Some are considered minimally invasive, such as having Botox or fillers, while others require a more in-depth operation, such as liposuction or rhinoplasty. The number of men who decide to undergo cosmetic surgery is also rising every year. In today’s world, particularly with the rise in popularity of social media, it has become more appropriate to show the best possible version of yourself. This may include a little nip, tuck, implant, or reshaping of areas on the face or body that a person is not fully pleased with. Luckily, there are treatments available to change a lot of different problems a man doesn’t have to deal with. Let’s look at the 6 most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men.

  • Gynecomastia: Gynecomastia surgery or breast reduction is done when a man has an overgrowth of breast tissue, generally due to a hormonal problem and not a weight gain. No amount of exercise is going to make the breast tissue get thinner because it’s a hormonal imbalance. It’s the same surgery that women want smaller breasts to have done, but it does involve the surgical removal of excess breast tissue and liposuction together to be most successful. The areola sometimes needs to be reshaped in the process. It’s performed under general anesthesia, and usually, the patient needs a full three to six months to heal completely. It just means taking it easy with sports, fitness, and daily tasks.
  • Hair Transplantation: Many men suffer from male pattern baldness. It may be a genetic trait that is passed down from their generations, however, thankfully, a hair transplant may solve the problem. It’s one of the few long-term choices that works to offer a man his hairline back from extreme hair loss. There are two different types of hair transplant operations. One is the FUE, which is where the doctor removes the donor hair from another part of the patient ‘s head or back, stomach, or legs. Each hair is transplanted one at a time during this form of procedure. The other type of procedure is the FUT, which means “follicular unit transplantation.” In the FUT, the doctor will transplant strips of hair instead of just individual follicles. The risk of scarring in this second form is higher, but the FUT may also create a thicker hairline since more hair is being used.
  • Liposuction: Liposuction is also a very common cosmetic treatment for men and women alike. Last year alone, almost 259,000 men underwent this form of fat-reducing surgery in a new window. Pockets of fat can be removed in a variety of different areas, but men particularly prefer to have this done in the stomach and flank areas. The flank area is where the “love handles” appear on the sides of a man’s body above his hips and below his ribs. This is achieved under general anesthesia where the incisions are made in the correct areas and the fat deposits are removed using a surgical vacuum. After surgery, compression clothing is used to help with swelling and to allow the body to adapt to its new shape.
  • Botox and Facial Fillers: Botox and facial fillers (soft tissue fillers) are known to be part of the minimally invasive group of cosmetic procedures. Looking at the number of men who had these forms of injections, there were a massive 10 million men. The most common areas on the face are around the mouth, the sides of the nose, and the glabellar lines that appear deep between the brows. Botox is different from facial fillers in the sense that Botox injections freeze the action of the muscles in the face below the line or wrinkle, rendering it less visible. Facial fillers are soft tissue injections, under some brand names like Juvederm and Restylane, which are made of a material containing hyaluronic acid. Both can be done in a cosmetic office setting, fully awake, and without much pain in the process.
  • Eyelid: The eyes are a body area that can certainly indicate a person’s age. This surgery is sometimes called an “eye rejuvenation” or the technical term is a blepharoplasty. In this operation, done under general anesthesia, the eyelids have extra skin that is removed and tightened. This can also reduce the presence of bags under the eyes and wrinkles around them. The scars in the operation are quite well concealed, and most of the time the eyelid lift gives the face a refreshing appearance that looks very youthful.
  • Rhinoplasty: A good old-fashioned nose job or rhinoplasty is still very popular with men. Over the years, men have played sports and have injured or broken the nose section. This can leave it crooked, or with an unattractive bump that can be changed by a rhinoplasty operation. Some men have done this because of a deviated septum that often triggers breathing difficulties, but it’s often not a cosmetic operation. It is done under general anesthesia, and normally the patient will need a few weeks to recover the swelling and bruising.
